In the Studio with Artist Margie Smeller

Today, we’re going In the Studio with artist Margie Smeller. Margie’s artwork is currently on display in the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Her Ideas, Her Stories: Women Artists Gallery exhibit.

Margie’s illustrations are a delightful combination of whimsy and color. She draws inspiration from pop films and National Geographic. Margie develops and composes her drawings into these wonderfully vibrant patterns that dance across the page. When she is not working on commissions or exhibiting her work, Margie is an accomplished athlete who competes in snowshoeing, skiing and kayaking.

Here’s Margie talking about her art, process and experience... 

How would you describe your style of work?

Small designs that repeat with lots of color.

Tell me about your favorite medium.

Colored pencils and sharpies.

What characteristic(s) about your personality shows through your art?

I am a sweet person, so I make sweets.

Do your works comment on contemporary social or political issues; if so, how?

No

What are your biggest motivations?

My biggest motivation is having people enjoy looking at my art!

How do you market yourself and your work?

Make Studio handles sales of my artwork.

When you are working through problems in your work, who do you talk to?

I ask Mom if I need any help.

What are you working on at the moment? 

A special Olympics piece!

Is there a specific environment or material that's integral to your work? 

I like [my work space] to be quiet.

How do you prepare to start a new piece? (do you have a ritual, do research, sketch it out, talk it out…)

My ideas just come to my head in dreams

What’s the best thing about being an artist?

Just having fun!
