In the Studio with Artist Dasha Kalumuck
Today, we’re going In the Studio with artist Dasha Kalumuck. Dasha’s artwork is currently on display in the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Her Ideas, Her Stories: Women Artists Gallery exhibit.
Dasha has been creating art since she was very young. For her, art has been a safe outlet for her to express her feelings. Dasha’s illustrations take the form of a comic-like style, coupling witty humor with characters that she has developed over the years. She works in a variety of mediums and enjoys taking an idea and putting her own personal spin on it. Dasha has been a member artist of Make Studio since 2015. When she is not illustrating, she likes going on “crazy adventures”.
Here’s Dasha talking about her art, process and experience...
How would you describe your style of work?
I am a cartoonist mostly.
Tell me about your favorite medium.
My favorite medium is watercolor, and I like to work on a smaller scale.
What characteristic(s) about your personality shows through your art?
My sense of humor and wit.
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
Maryland. [Sometimes] I paint places I go to and what is around me
How have your life experiences influenced your aesthetic style?
I paint my family and friends and experiences.
Do you think there’s a double standard in the industry?
Not sure
Do your works comment on contemporary social or political issues; if so, how?
Some of my stuff relates to the environment and keeping the planet clean.
What are your biggest motivations?
Friends and family, as well as my daily life.
How do you market yourself and your work?
Make Studio handles this for me.
When you are working through problems in your work, who do you talk to?
I work it out [myself], or I talk to the studio staff.
What are you working on at the moment?
Bears shopping.
Is there a specific environment or material that's integral to your work?
Not really.
How do you prepare to start a new piece? (do you have a ritual, do research, sketch it out, talk it out…)
I usually use what is happening [around me]. and [often] make the art with bears!
What’s the best thing about being an artist?
There is not just one thing! I can express myself, and I can share [my art] with others to enjoy!
