Artist: Jordyn Roemer : Jordyn Roemer is a mother, artist, and teacher based out of Brooklyn Park, Maryland. This body of work is a reflection on the impact of the relationships we have with the people around us. The influence they have on us as human beings, and the careful ways in which we selectively maintain our barriers or allow ourselves to open up. These artworks are a nod to Japanese Kintsugi, where gold is used to mend broken pottery, creating something more beautiful than the original piece. The connections we make in our lives outside of ourselves do exactly that… when we’re ready for them.

She has taught art with Room 13 International in Scotland, led after school art programming in Charlotte, NC, and now in Maryland. Her educational philosophy is rooted in the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy which asserts that the child is the artist and the art room is their studio.

Her supportive family includes her husband and two teenage offspring. The family's two cats keep Lauren company while she paints in her home studio where she has a lovely view of rooftops, treetops, birds on power lines, and a large amount of sky. "I continue to look to nature, even in my urban environment, to keep me grounded and as reference for my paintings."

[a Saturday eclipse]
Off I go, grasping at openings;
my chest yawning to engulf the murmurings of the city.
Flickers that evade—
dancing through windows,
scrawling across the sidewalk,
erupting into confetti,
dappling the concrete,
seasoning the day.
