In the Studio with Artist Dr. Daniel Farcas

Today, we’re going In the Studio with artist Dr. Daniel Farcas. Daniel’s artwork is currently on display in the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Power to…the Art of Protest Gallery exhibit.

Daniel Farcas was born in the 1980’s during the communist era in Romania. Though his art is not the main focus of his life, his work strongly reflects the emotional turmoil growing up an orphan on the streets in Bucharest. His graphically dominent work is made more powerful through the use of his medium; cut and collaged stamps from his former home in Romania. At first glance, Daniel’s work has an uplifting, almost light quality due to the brightly colored stamps, but after a moments inspection the realization of his statement sets in. When he is not creating art or writing, Dr. Farcas is spending time with his children or focusing on research in occupational health.

Here’s Daniel talking about his art, process and experience...

What style, genre or medium of art excites you the most?

Graphic art, like M. C. Escher drawings.

Do you consider yourself an artist? Why or why not?

I consider everyone is an artist in their own way.

Who is your mentor and what did they teach you?

Life is my mentor. It taught me about peoples place in nature.

How do you find inspiration?

People and events inspire me.

What emotion(s) fuel your work?

Empathy.

What does your artwork represent?

My art represents what people don’t have the courage to say.

When did you start creating art? Was there an event that led you to this?

I started in school by drawing with pencils or pens on my notebooks.

How often do you create art?

Very rarely now, once per year.

When do you art? (before coffee, after bed, when inspiration strikes…)

When I get the urge. Can happen at anytime and anywhere.

What is your studio/creative space like? Or what is your favorite place to create in?

I do not have a dedicated place. It may happen anywhere, home, hotel or elevator.

Do you work on one piece of art at a time, or multiple?

Just one by one, although I have multiple in my mind.

What’s in a name; how do you title your artworks?

I choose names that amplify the artworks attributes.

How has your art/style evolved over time?

I am always looking for new styles, I started working in pen and I am doing stamps collages right now.

What’s your favorite medium to work in? Do you explore others?

I like to try new different media occasionally.

What’s your go-to song or album that you listen to while you create?

Beatles, ABBA, and Sinatra.

What city have you always wanted to create art in?

Paris!

If you could be anything besides an artist, what would you be, and why?

I am a chemist; art is my hobby.
