Today, we’re going In the Studio with new CAC Theatre Instructor Adrienne Bergeron. Adrienne graduated Summa Cum Laude from Lees-McRae College with a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts Studies with emphases in musical theatre and dance in 2008 and has since been building an extensive resume as a theatre choreographer, director and teaching artist.

We’re thrilled to have Adrienne onboard and can’t wait to feel the energy from her Broadway Dance class that starts this week! Here’s Adrienne talking about her background, theatre career and teaching experience:

On being an artist

I don't know if there was a pivotal moment when I knew I was an artist mainly because I've always been one to be creating, moving, fixing, and so forth. I grew up in a household where it was very encouraged and as a kid I was in anything I could get my hands on--band, choir, theatre, dance. You name it!

On choosing a career in theatre

I was cast in an outdoor drama as the lead understudy back when I was about 17 years old. While I knew arts needed to be in my life, when I had to step in for the lead one night and felt those lights and the connection between myself and the audience, I knew I had to go into theatre for a career choice!

On finding her love of teaching

Years ago, I was put as a resident artist at a theatre for nine months. While I was thrilled I would be a part of every show that season, I also had the chance to start my dance teacher career. I was in charge of choreographing every childrens theatre production as well as the dance classes on the weekends. I found a deep love for teaching and creating for others--that led me to teaching "on the side" for many years, but then later to pursue a career in musical theatre choreography!

On finding inspiration

I find inspiration in my students! They're always inspiring me to create, but also look on the bright side of life.

On her favorite teaching moment

I had a student a few years back who was extremely nervous to be on stage in any respect. She would cry, and have difficulty just staying in the room for the entire rehearsal period. Watching her transform from the shy and nervous student in class one, to performing in our full length production by the end of the rehearsal process, was such a delight and honor. She gained confidence and a real love of theatre in that short amount of time!

Advice for aspiring artists

Revel in ambiguity! It's okay to not have all the answers--but be excited by the unknown is the first step! And ask questions--constantly.

On her new passion

When I'm not dancing, teaching, choreographing, or teaching, you can find me baking! You can follow my baking adventures @TheKarmaKitchn
